Spectral efficiency of optical direct detection
نویسنده
چکیده
The spectral efficiency (channel capacity) of the optical direct-detection channel is studied. The modeling of the optical direct-detection channel as a discrete-time Poisson channel is reviewed. Closed-form integral representations for the entropy of random variables with Poisson and negative binomial distributions are derived. The spectral efficiency achievable with an arbitrary input gamma density is expressed in closed integral form. Simple, nonasymptotic upper and lower bounds to the channel capacity are computed. Numerical results are presented and compared with previous bounds and approximations. © 2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 060.4510, 030.5260.

Layered ACO-OFDM for intensity-modulated direct-detection optical wireless transmission.
Layered asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) with high spectral efficiency is proposed in this paper for optical wireless transmission employing intensity modulation with direct detection. In contrast to the conventional ACO-OFDM, which only utilizes odd subcarriers for modulation, leading to an obvious spectral efficiency loss, in layered ACO-OFD...

Asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) is a technique that sacrifices spectral efficiency in order to transmit an orthogonally frequency-division multiplexed signal over a unipolar channel, such as a directly modulated direct-detection fiber or free-space channel. Several methods have been proposed to regain this spectral efficiency, including: asym...
متن کاملTarget Detection Improvements in Hyperspectral Images by Adjusting Band Weights and Identifying end-members in Feature Space Clusters
Spectral target detection could be regarded as one of the strategic applications of hyperspectral data analysis. The presence of targets in an area smaller than a pixel’s ground coverage has led to the development of spectral un-mixing methods to detect these types of targets. Usually, in the spectral un-mixing algorithms, the similar weights have been assumed for spectral bands. Howe...
متن کاملOFDM Systems for Optical Communication with Intensity Modulation and Direct Detection
Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a cost-effective optical communication strategy which finds wide applications in fiber communication, free-space optical communication, and indoor visible light communication. In IM/DD, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), originally employed in radio frequency communication, is considered as a strong candidate solution to comba...
متن کاملPerformance of Optical OFDM systems using new PAPR Reduction approach
The major drawback of optical orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDM) system is their inherent intensity noise and peak average power ratio (PAPR). We introduce a new direct detection receiver based on PAPR reduction for optical OFDMA systems that maintains greater noise mitigating and leaves spectral efficiency unchanged. Unlike standard receivers, our scheme does not filter the d...
